Swing With the Music
Liz Masterson and Sean Blackburn
© 1991
Out of the gloom of the Dust Bowl, bread lines and the Great Depression of the 1930's emerged a dance craze called "SWING". Characterized by jazz chord structures, syncopated rhythm, and hot improvisational "take-off" solos, this music lifted the feet and the spirits of a weary nations and spread throughout Europe.
It took the country by storm ... from the Savoy Ballroom and the Cotton Club in Harlem, to a roadside diner in Duluth ... on radios and jukeboxes ... swing music was everywhere. The popularity of the swing phenomenon remains unequaled in history. Music and dancing helped people through the troubled times of World War II. But after the war, high transportation costs and television had tremendous impact on the "Big Band Era."
Swing music is a pure American art form, and the magic of the songs and sentiments has endured half a century. (We see no end in sight ...)

We try to blend the classic songs of the 1930s with some new songs. We're always looking for the obscure lost gems.
We didn't set out to do a theme album, we just made a list of some of our favorites. But it's interesting how many of these songs were in films in the 1930s and 1940s. And most were hits on the radio.
The image of the"Singing Cowboy" is gaining respect as more than a pop culture icon; it's a reflection of those of us who long for a simpler life enjoying the vast splendor of the Western landscape. In this crazy world, folks need a beautiful fantasy to cling to, and for us it's always been lopin' along, singin' a song. Now, it's becoming a reality.

In our years singing together, we made thousands of new friends as we traveled to most of the United States and a little bit of Canada. Over the years and miles, certain songs emerged as "most requested" by our audiences. They're YOUR favorites as well as OURS.
While we always enjoy uncovering obscure material and will continue to pursue the "lost gems", we wanted to do a Hit Parade Album. There was something very comforting about creating our own versions of the western classics -- the songs that have stood the test of time, and have endured the "whims of popularity" and bring back good memories. It's like a new adventure with an old friend.

Our first two recordings, "Swingtime Cowgirl" and "Tune Wranglin'" are no longer available on cassette (or wax cylinder). They were combined on this CD.
Swingtime Cowgirl
Liz Masterson and Sean Blackburn
© 1988This recording is dedicated to Patsy Montana and the Prairie Ramblers. Patsy blazed the trail for women in western (and country) music as a female front person, backed by a hot swing band. That is the feel we were going for on this project.
This cassette launched my recording career and was the start of my musical partnership with Sean Blackburn. We made three more albums in the next four years and still enjoy performing all the songs from this debut recording.
Tune Wranglin'
Liz Masterson and Sean Blackburn
© 1989One of the early Western Swing bands in the 1930's was called the "Tune Wranglers." They played and infectious, happy style and included songs of the jazz greats like Duke Ellingon into their music. We respectfully thank them and all western musicians and fans for inspiring us to keep on wranglin' these tunes.

When the Work's All Done This Fall
A Collection of Old-Time Cowboy songs by
Duane Dickinson
©2003"We were amazed at Duane's incredible Repertoire of Victorian ballads and 'old cowboy songs.' ...He is deeply respected in our industry for his pure, sweet singing, appropriate guitar accompaniement and for being a treasure trove of songs. His influence is wide spread, and many of us owe him a debt of gratitude for teaching us how these songs are meant to be sung! Over the last 20 years, Duane has performed at the top cowboy poetry gatherings all over the west and also at cultural and historical centers, livestock banquests, radio shows and concerts. Thank you Duane --for your kind, gentle ways -- and for all the fun we've had!" -- Liz and Sean

Western Swing Ukulele
Sid Hausman & Washtub Jerry
©2004
with Liz Masterson and George LangstonThis CD is the result of a passion for the ukulele and lifelong love of western music. The ukulele's strong rhythm makes it a natural for Western Swing.
Ukulele music was very popular at one time. The sheet music for "Riding Down the Canyon" by Gene Autry and Smiley Burnett, as well as many songs from the 1920's and 1930's, were written with ukulele chords. In recent years I have noticed a revial of interest in the ukulele at festivals across the country.
